Job Description

We are looking for an individual with demonstrated ability in legal analysis, particularly in the area of occupational health and safety and prevention of injury and disease to fill the role of Senior Manager, Legal Services.

The incumbent will work within Litigation Department in Law & Policy and will be responsible for managing the Investigation Legal Officer team, providing legal advice to Prevention Services, assisting in the provision of legal advice to investigation teams and acting as the legal gatekeeper from time to time in prosecution investigations. You will also manage the civil injunction program which will require attendance in B.C. Supreme Court occasionally.

Where you'll work
At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines working remotely, and in our offices based on the operational needs of the position.
  • Manage the Investigation Legal Officer team, provide legal advice to Prevention Services, assist in the provision of legal advice to investigation teams and act as the legal gatekeeper from time to time in prosecution investigations. You will also lead the civil injunction program which may require attendance in B.C. Supreme Court from time to time.
  • You may also represent WorkSafeBC in all levels of Court at arbitrations, mediations and hearings in regard to WorkSafeBC's operations and business activities.
  • Mentor and coach department lawyers in the handling of Prevention related matters.
  • Promote a client focused service-oriented approach in providing services to internal and external customers.

We're looking for someone who:
  • Thinks and acts strategically and build relationships while aligning with organizational objectives.
  • Demonstrates strong skills in planning, leading and delivering litigation services and project management skills and have the ability to manage several competing priorities at any given time.
  • Understands the role of the legal gatekeeper and be able to learn the complexities of this function.
  • Clearly and concisely explains, presents, and summarizes information verbally and demonstrates the ability to influence at a level appropriate to the intended audience.
  • Generates creative options for problem resolution using sound judgment, analyzing data and maintaining objectivity.
  • Understands, communicates and effectively interacts with people across different cultures and backgrounds.
  • Creates a supportive and healthy working environment within the team by providing support, coaching and developmental planning to support and motivate staff.
  • Fosters a constructive labour relations environment within the team and deals proactively with issues. Administer the provisions of the collective agreement and handle grievances at the informal level.
Your background and experience
  • A Law Degree (LLB or JD), member in good standing of The Law Society of British Columbia, and at least 7 years experience in practice in the area of law relevant to the position.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant area(s) of law and of the workers compensation system and relevant legislation.
  • Strong and proven leadership, management and/or supervisory experience preferred.
